Judah ben Samuel of Regensburg, Prophet About Year 2017
![]() |
Judah Ben Samuel (1150-1217) Germany |
Through DNA testing on familytreedna's family finder test, a test of our autosomal DNA, I have found that I have a few segments of chromosomes from the famous Kalonymus family in Lucca, Italy, a part of Tuscany, a Jewish family that came to Italy from Judah, probably at the fall of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. "The family is according to many considered the foundation of Hachmei and Hasidei Ashkenaz." This comes to me from my Goldfoot/Goldfus ancestors. My father was Moses "Maurice" Goldfoot, son of Nathan Goldfoot/fus of Telsiai, Lithuania. I was surprised to find that Italy was identified as a source of a few genes.
From this family, we find we have chromosomes from the Rabbi of Worms, who was connected to Rashi, who claimed descendancy from King David.
This means that on our tree, Judah ben Samuel of Regensburg, Germany is also on our tree. Judah was descended from this old family of Kalonymus, kabbalists from Northern Italy that had settled in Germany. He was born in 1150 in Speyer, Germany and died on George Washington's birthday, February 22, 1217 in Regensburg. His grandfather was Kalonymus who was a scholar and parnas in Speyer who died in 1126. His father Samuel, also was called he-?asid (the pious, was president of a bet ha-midrash in Speyer. From him, Judah, together with his brother Abraham, received his early instruction. Samuel died while Judah was still young. Judah left one son, Moses Zaltman, author of a commentary on several parts of the Bible.
In about 1195 the latter left his native place and settled in Regensburg (Ratisbon) because most likely of a ritual murder accusation on February 13, 1195, which caused persecution of Jews in Speyer. He was also called HeHasid or 'the Pious' in Hebrew. He was a leader of the Chassidei Ashkenaz, a movement of Jewish mysticism in Germany, a little different from kabbalistic mysticism because it emphasizes specific prayer and moral conduct.
Judah ben Samuel founded a yeshiva in Regensburg and had many pupils. Among those who became famous were Eleazar of Worms, (Rabbi of Worms), whose full name was Eleazar Ben Judah Ben Kalonymos, who was his relative. Eleazar of Worms called Judah ben Samuel the "father of Wisdom."
Judah had prophecized that the year 2017 would be the year of Israel's redemption. So far, he has been right on with the prediction that leads up to this. Read my article listed below; Bible predictions from Judah the pious.
